In his 1989 masterpiece essay ‘The End of History’ and finally in a 1992 book ‘The End of History and the Last Man’ Francis Fukuyama – a Stanford philosopher argued that the collapse of communism and other forms of ideologies – socialism, fascism, Nazism etc. paved a clear way for the spread of liberal democracy and western capitalism. Fukuyama suggested that humankind might have achieved a kind of endpoint in its socio-political evolution and that liberal democracy helps man to attain the highest level of satisfaction and recognition that no other ideologies perhaps have been able to fulfill.

Yet, overtime, democracy continue to suffer major setbacks – e.g. the capitol hill riots, the rise and political era of Trumpism, the rise of pseudo or illiberal democracy and competitive electoral authoritarianism. What major pitfalls will democracy continue to endure, are we seeing an end of an ideological endpoint – which is likely to usher another form of idea different from liberal democracy? or as Fukuyama recently argued in a foreign policy magazine, democracy is not going to be the end of history in itself but rather we shall see a perpetual variants of democracy. What are the realities of Africa as far as democracy is concerned; is it an alien strategy imposed different from our own context or perhaps the only appropriate model able to withstand and incorporate man’s quest and desire for participation and voice over its governance?
